01In brief
Tamir Blatt (born May 1997) is an Israeli basketball point guard. He has played for clubs in Israel and Germany and represented Israel’s national team. In Game 1 of the 2025 Israeli league finals, he scored Maccabi Tel Aviv’s final nine points in a 91–88 victory over Hapoel Jerusalem. His career has included three Israeli State Cup victories with Holon and Jerusalem, a move to Alba Berlin, and EuroLeague competition with Alba and Maccabi. The son of coach David Blatt, he signed to return to Hapoel Tel Aviv in August 2026.
02Early Life
Blatt was born in May 1997 and grew up moving with his family through Russia, Italy, Turkey, and Greece while his father, David Blatt, coached abroad.[1] His childhood included exposure to basketball at major clubs, including Dynamo Moscow.[1] He was also associated with Netanya, where he was described as a native.[5]
At age 14, Blatt scored 34 points for Hapoel Lev Hasharon in the final of Israel’s children’s State Cup.[1] The following year, he recorded a triple-double in the youth cup final for the same club.[1] He subsequently joined the Israel Basketball Association’s academy and played for its youth teams.[1]
In summer 2014, aged 17, he chose to join Hapoel Tel Aviv while also playing for second-division A.S. Ramat Hasharon under a dual-registration arrangement.[1] During his time with Ramat Hasharon, he averaged 9.7 points, 5.1 assists, and 2.6 rebounds in 28.3 minutes per game.[1]
03Career
Blatt began his professional career in 2014 by signing a four-year contract with Hapoel Tel Aviv.[5] His first Israeli Premier League appearance came during the 2014–15 season, after injuries to teammates created an opening in the lineup.[1] He played 12 minutes against Gilboa/Galil without scoring.[1] Coach Oded Kattash praised his ability to break pressure, bring the ball forward, look quickly for passes, and help teammates play better.[1]
Blatt remained with Hapoel Tel Aviv from 2014 to 2017.[2] During the first season, he also played for Ramat Hasharon in the second division under a dual-registration arrangement.[1] In 2017, he became an All-Star in Israel’s top division.[5] That summer, he helped Israel finish second at the European Under-20 Championship, leading the tournament with 9.3 assists per game and earning selection to its all-star team.[8]
After leaving Hapoel Tel Aviv, Blatt spent a season with Hapoel Holon, winning the Israeli State Cup in 2018 under coach Dan Shamir.[5] He then played for Hapoel Jerusalem from 2018 to 2021 and won two more State Cups.[5][2] Across his time with those clubs, he played one Basketball Champions League season for Holon and three for Jerusalem; in 2019, he received the competition’s Best Young Player Award.[5]
In November 2020, while a Hapoel Jerusalem player, Blatt led Israel with 21 points and nine assists in a 95–87 victory over Spain in a EuroBasket 2022 qualifier in Valencia.[9] Israel had trailed 52–36 at halftime before recovering to win, leaving the team at the top of qualifying Group A with three victories from three games.[9]
Blatt moved to Alba Berlin in 2021, beginning his first professional spell abroad and his EuroLeague career.[5][2] In his first EuroLeague season, he averaged five points and 3.5 assists in just over 15 minutes per game.[5] Alba won the German championship and cup during that season.[5] By January 2023, his reported averages for the 2022–23 EuroLeague season had risen to 9.1 points and 4.8 assists in under 22 minutes per game.[5]
Blatt described his first months in Berlin as an adjustment to a new city, teammates, and playing system, followed by a turning point when he began playing more and performing better.[5] He said his second season felt more familiar, although he attributed a subsequent team losing streak partly to injuries and the difficulty players faced in returning to playing shape.[5] Looking back in a 2023 interview, he said that leaving Israel to play abroad had been difficult but had helped him grow.[10]
After two seasons in Germany, Blatt joined Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2023 on a two-year contract.[7][2] He credited Kattash with a major influence on his career, particularly through their work together at Hapoel Jerusalem and with Israel’s under-20 team.[10] In his first Maccabi season, Blatt averaged seven points and 4.8 assists in nearly 19 minutes per game.[6] He was named to the Israeli league’s second-team All-Stars in June 2024.[11]
His role expanded after changes to Maccabi’s roster, and he opened the 2024–25 EuroLeague season with career highs in the competition: 21 points, 12 assists, and a performance index rating of 36 in an 89–82 victory over ASVEL.[6] The performance earned him EuroLeague Player of the Round honors for the first time.[6]
In Game 1 of the 2025 Israeli league finals, Blatt finished with 14 points, five assists, and one turnover in 21 minutes as Maccabi defeated Hapoel Jerusalem 91–88.[4] With 1:49 remaining and Maccabi leading 82–80, he made a three-pointer before converting all six of his subsequent free throws, accounting for his team’s final nine points.[4] In October 2025, his three-pointer with 4.3 seconds left secured a 92–91 EuroLeague victory over Real Madrid in Belgrade.[12] He finished that game with 12 points and nine assists, helping Maccabi improve its season record to 2–4.[12]
In November 2025, Blatt’s return to Israel’s national team was announced ahead of the 2027 World Cup qualifying campaign, following an absence since EuroBasket 2022.[3] Coach Ariel Beit Halachmi said the two had spoken and that Blatt was committed to returning.[3] During an August 2026 qualifying game against Poland, Blatt recorded 11 points and 10 assists in 24 minutes but suffered an injury; an MRI subsequently ruled him out of the following game against Latvia.[13]
Hapoel Tel Aviv announced Blatt’s signing in August 2026 on a three-year contract, with an arrangement then expected to send him on loan during his first season.[2] As of October 31, 2026, he had not made his season debut for Hapoel.[14] He had recovered from a hamstring tear sustained during the national-team window, which had kept him out for approximately two months, and a debut in the upcoming Tel Aviv derby was considered possible.[14]
04Legacy
Playmaking has featured prominently in Blatt’s individual recognition, from his tournament-leading assist average at the 2017 European Under-20 Championship to his 12-assist performance that earned his first EuroLeague Player of the Round award.[8][6] His honors have also included the Basketball Champions League’s Best Young Player Award and All-Star recognition in the Israeli league.[5][11]
Blatt has repeatedly described the EuroLeague as his childhood ambition, saying in 2025: “There are kids who dreamed of playing in the NBA; I dreamed of the EuroLeague.”[15] Before his first Maccabi season, he recalled watching the club’s games as a child and wanting to play on its court.[10] While expressing admiration for his father’s coaching career, he also said that he wanted to create his own story.[10] In discussing his development in 2025, he acknowledged criticism of his defense and said players should work on weaknesses rather than ignore them.[15]
05Controversies
Blatt’s absences from Israel’s national team became a public dispute over his fitness and availability.[15] In a 2025 interview, he said he had represented Israel’s youth teams since age 13, wanted to return to the senior team, and felt hurt by people around it.[15] He maintained that injuries preventing his participation in qualifying windows were genuine and that officials had failed to support him.[15] Israel Basketball Association chairman Amos Frishman questioned that explanation, pointing to Blatt’s return to Maccabi games only days after missing national-team fixtures.[15] Blatt also rejected claims of a dispute with teammate Yam Madar.[15]
