Matan Baltaxa

Published

01In brief

Matan Baltaxa is an Israeli professional footballer who plays primarily as a left-sided central defender and can also operate at left back. He began his senior career at Hapoel Petah Tikva, debuted for its first team in 2013, and later represented Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Beersheba in the Israel Premier League, while also appearing for the Israel national team. Known for his physicality and aerial ability, he has provided a set-piece threat for several clubs.

02Early Life and Career Beginnings

Baltaxa made his first-team debut for Hapoel Petah Tikva in 2013.[1] He spent several years at the club before agreeing to move to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

In February 2017, Maccabi announced the signing of the then-21-year-old left back, with the transfer set to take effect that summer on a four-season contract.[1] Maccabi's sporting director at the time, Jordi Cruyff, said the club had followed Baltaxa for an extended period and believed he possessed promising potential.[1]

03Loan Spells and the Bnei Yehuda Years

Rather than stepping straight into Maccabi Tel Aviv's first team, Baltaxa's early years at the club were shaped by loan moves. He first spent half a season at Hapoel Acre, where he did not establish himself.[2] A subsequent two-season loan at Bnei Yehuda proved far more productive and marked an important stage of his development.[2]

In February 2019, Baltaxa opened the scoring for Bnei Yehuda against Hapoel Hadera in Israel Premier League action, heading home a Dolev Haziza corner in the ninth minute of a 4–0 victory.[3] That season culminated in cup glory: Bnei Yehuda faced Maccabi Netanya in the State Cup final, drawing 1–1 before winning 5–4 on penalties, with Baltaxa named in the starting lineup.[2][4] It was his first senior trophy as a professional.

04Maccabi Tel Aviv

Baltaxa returned to Maccabi Tel Aviv after his loan period, but his path to regular first-team football was not immediate. Opportunities were limited at first before he worked his way into a more prominent role.[2] Those close to him described his approach during the difficult stretches: "He always believed in himself and aimed for his goal; even during the difficult periods, when he was outside the squad for quite a while, he always worked hard and quietly waited for his opportunity."[2]

By the 2021/22 season, he had become a significant contributor, making 28 appearances across all competitions and scoring twice.[2] His primary position settled as a left-sided central defender, though he also featured at left back when required.[2]

One of the highlights of his time at Maccabi came in August 2020, when he scored in the Toto Cup final against Bnei Sakhnin. In the 65th minute, Itay Shechter headed a Dan Bitton free kick into Baltaxa's path and he converted to put Maccabi ahead in what finished as a 2–0 win, giving the club its seventh Toto Cup title.[5] The squad that day was made up largely of younger players because Maccabi had a Champions League qualifying fixture against Suduva later that week.[5]

In May 2022, Nikita Rukavytsya was sent off in the 15th minute for a reckless challenge on Baltaxa during Maccabi's 1–1 draw with Hapoel Beersheba. The result came in the round when Maccabi Haifa clinched the 2021/22 Premier League title.[6]

05International Career

Baltaxa made his senior debut for the Israel national team as a substitute in a friendly defeat to Portugal, playing 18 minutes in a 4–0 loss.[2]

He later featured in Israel's World Cup qualifying campaign. In an October 2025 qualifier played in Italy, a foul by Baltaxa on Mateo Retegui inside the penalty area gave Italy a penalty that became its opening goal before halftime; Israel went on to lose 3–0.[7] The defeat officially eliminated Israel from contention to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.[7]

06Hapoel Beersheba

Baltaxa joined Hapoel Beersheba in September 2024 after falling to fourth or fifth in Maccabi Tel Aviv's central-defender pecking order. His ability to operate both centrally and at fullback offered Beersheba additional defensive versatility.[8]

During the 2024/25 season, he contributed to a series of significant results. In April 2025, he scored the winning goal in a 2–1 Premier League victory over Hapoel Haifa at Sammy Ofer Stadium, finishing a ball in the box following a Kings Kangwa corner to put Beersheba ahead for good. The win kept the club at the top of the league.[9] Later that month, he scored again as Beersheba completed a 3–0 win over Maccabi Haifa, netting in quick succession with Alon Turgeman.[10]

In May 2026, Baltaxa was involved with Kangwa in the team move that Javon East finished to double Beersheba's lead against Hapoel Petah Tikva. Beersheba won 4–2, with East scoring a hat trick.[11]

In the April 2025 State Cup semifinal against Hapoel Tel Aviv, Beersheba led 4–0 at halftime before Baltaxa was sent off early in the second half after collecting two yellow cards. Beersheba nonetheless won 5–1 and advanced to the final.[12] Ahead of the May 2026 State Cup final, Baltaxa was expected to deputise at left back for the injured Helder Lopes.[8] After that final, Beersheba formally extended Baltaxa's contract for a further two years.[13]

In August 2026, Baltaxa played in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League third-round qualifier against Red Star Belgrade. He received two quick yellow cards on the same play in the 58th minute and was dismissed.[14] Despite playing with 10 men for more than 30 minutes, Beersheba held on to win the first leg 1–0.[14]

07Playing Style and Legacy

Primarily a left-sided central defender who can also play at left back, Baltaxa's game has been associated with physicality and aerial strength. In March 2022, he had won 60 of 82 aerial duels—a 73% success rate—and ranked fifth among league defenders for attempts from inside the penalty area, illustrating his value at set pieces.[2]

His senior honors include the 2018/19 State Cup with Bnei Yehuda and a later State Cup with Maccabi Tel Aviv. During Maccabi's cup run, he started both the semifinal against Maccabi Haifa and the final against Hapoel Tel Aviv.[2]
