01In brief

Yael Bar Zohar (born 1980) is an actress, television presenter, singer, dancer, and former model whose career includes Israeli television, musical theater, and film. She rose to prominence as a teenager through the Pilpel swimwear campaign and the television soap opera Ramat Aviv Gimmel, and appeared in nine Festigal productions, winning first place three times. Her later work includes Eytan Fox’s musical comedy Cupcakes and the series Ba’alat Hachalomot. She also competed in Dancing with the Stars.

02Early Life

Bar Zohar was born in 1980 and grew up in the Ramat Aviv neighborhood of Tel Aviv, where she attended Alliance school.[1] Her father, Menachem, was a physical-education teacher, and her mother, Ella Fogel-Bar Zohar, was a nurse and manager in the children’s department at Dana-Dwek Children’s Hospital.[1] She has an older sister, Michal, and belonged to the youth troupe HaShchenim Shel Chich.[1] Her parents divorced, an experience she later said had affected her.[6]

Her first advertising appearance came at age nine in the road-safety public-service advertisement “Stop Before You Cross,” in which she had a single line.[2] She subsequently appeared in childhood advertisements for the Milk Council and Coca-Cola.[2] In 1995 she made her stage debut as Bathsheba in the musical David, performing with HaShchenim Shel Chich and gaining national exposure.[2]

03Career and Public Life

Bar Zohar’s modeling breakthrough came when she was cast at age 16 in the Pilpel swimwear campaign.[2] Her first significant television role was Sharon Linovitz in Ramat Aviv Gimmel, which remained her professional home for five years, through 2000, and helped establish her as a youth star.[2] She later hosted Tishtush and spent three years presenting on the Children’s Channel.[2]

She first participated in Festigal in 1996 and won its winning-song prize.[2] Across her involvement in the productions, she appeared nine times and placed first three times.[2] Her stage career also included Mary Lou, based on songs by Zvika Pik, and A Quiet Night, based on songs by Shlomo Artzi.[2]

In 1999 Bar Zohar enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces with outstanding-artist status.[1] She served as an instructional-film producer in the Air Force’s film unit and was discharged after approximately one year.[1] By 2006, at age 26, she had spent a decade as a prominent entertainment figure.[7]

Her subsequent television roles included Dana Bloom in Telenovela בע״מ in 2005 and news presenter Gali Arazi in חשופים in 2008.[2] She made her film debut in Cupcakes, also known by its Hebrew title Bananot, directed by Eytan Fox and released in 2013.[2][3] The musical comedy follows friends in a Tel Aviv suburb whose song becomes Israel’s entry in a Eurovision-like contest.[3] Bar Zohar played Yael, a former beauty queen dissatisfied with her work as a corporate lawyer.[3] Discussing his ensemble of television, film, and music performers, Fox described Bar Zohar as “a pin-up who hasn’t had too many chances to do dramatic acting.”[8]

In 2021 she discussed returning to acting in the HOT series Ba’alat Hachalomot after deliberately spending more time with her children.[4] Her character was a religiously observant woman who wore a head covering and accepted her gay son, a part she regarded as different from her usual glamorous roles.[4] By that interview, she had also presented The Daily Report and was producing material for her own YouTube channel.[4]

In 2022 Bar Zohar competed on Channel 12’s Dancing with the Stars, partnered with professional dancer Anton Lapidus.[5][9] They reached the live semifinal, where they were eliminated after a dance-off against her friend Adi Ashkenazi.[5] Reflecting on the experience, she described the opportunity to dance, perform onstage, and reconnect directly with an audience as a gift.[5]

Her commercial work continued alongside her screen appearances: in 2022 she was selected to represent the skincare brand Vichy in Israel through digital and social-media campaigns and product launches.[9] In 2023 she joined Keshet 12’s Morning News, hosted by Niv Raskin, as a regular panelist, following appearances as a guest panelist on The Masked Singer.[10]

Bar Zohar also became involved with Lemaanchem as an activist and volunteer.[11] In 2024 she moderated the organization’s conference on artificial intelligence and medicine.[11]

04Personal Life

Bar Zohar and her future husband, Guy Zu-Aretz, first met on the set of Ramat Aviv Gimmel, and their relationship developed while they were working together on Mary Lou.[12] They married in 2005.[12] A June 2006 report said they were expecting a child, and by 2021 Bar Zohar was describing herself as a mother of three.[4][13]

Discussing the relationship between family and work in 2010, she said, “Motherhood calmed my ambitions.”[6] She explained that she enjoyed working and creating but had never placed work first, and that relationships had been especially important to her since her teenage years.[6] She later said that slowing her career to focus on family had been a conscious choice and that she did not feel she had lost anything by doing so.[4]

In 2021 she explained that, after working intensively from age 15, she had deliberately devoted more time to her children.[4] Recalling a conversation before a Festigal production, she said her son Yahli had asked whether she still remembered how to act; she answered by comparing her acting experience with his ability to shoot a basketball.[4]

05Legacy

Bar Zohar’s early prominence combined modeling, a long-running television role, children’s broadcasting, and repeated appearances in musical entertainment.[2] Her later performances extended from the ensemble film Cupcakes to a religiously observant character in Ba’alat Hachalomot.[3][4] She also returned to dance performance and joined television panel work.[5][10]

She has also reflected publicly on the pressures surrounding her teenage celebrity.[4] In a 2021 interview, she recalled that a reporter had asked about her virginity when she was 15, leading to a headline that described her as a “15-year-old virgin, sex symbol.”[4] She said the question invaded her privacy and that, because she was young and eager to please, she had not set a boundary at the time.[4]

06Controversies

Bar Zohar interviewed women for Ruthy Leviev’s She’asani Isha campaign, which promoted traditional Jewish practices associated with ritual purity.[14] Her reported payment for participating was NIS 40,000–50,000.[14] The campaign drew criticism from both secular and religious commentators, including objections to the commercial presentation of religious observance.[14]
