01In brief
Meir Tapiro is a retired Israeli professional basketball player, coach and executive regarded as one of Israel's leading basketball figures. Across 21 seasons in the country's top division, he made 511 appearances according to a 2023 report, a league record Guy Pnini tied that year. Tapiro was named Israeli league Player of the Year in 2002 and 2004, captained Israel at EuroBasket 2007, and played in four senior European Championships. During his 2004/05 season with Nancy, he won the French Cup and was named the competition's MVP. After retiring from active play in 2016, he coached Maccabi Ashdod and Hapoel Eilat, moved into management at Ironi Ness Ziona, and returned to the club's bench in January 2026.
02Early Life and Development
Tapiro first encountered basketball at the age of 10 in Kiryat Ata, the northern Israeli city where he grew up.[1] He developed through the youth department of Elitzur Kiryat Ata[2] and signed his first professional contract at just 15 years old.[1] Those beginnings launched what he later described as a 32-year journey in basketball.
In his 2016 retirement announcement, Tapiro said that the game had fundamentally shaped him and made clear that he was stepping away from active play rather than from basketball itself: "I'm not sitting here to announce retirement from basketball, but retirement from active play. I can't retire from basketball."[1]
03Playing Career
Tapiro made his Israeli Premier League debut for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the 1994/95 season, aged 19.[3] That season he scored his first career game-winner against Maccabi Tel Aviv. With Hapoel trailing 81–82 in the closing seconds, the ball reached Tapiro in the right corner after Maccabi double-teamed the intended recipient; he dribbled and made the winning shot.[3] Over the following two decades, he represented 10 Israeli clubs, including Kiryat Motzkin, Hapoel Eilat, Maccabi Haifa, Hapoel Jerusalem, Bnei Hasharon, Maccabi Rishon LeZion, Maccabi Ashdod and Ironi Ness Ziona, before finishing his playing career with Maccabi Kiryat Gat.[2]
Tapiro was named league Player of the Year in 2002 and 2004, earned three All-League Team selections, and led the league in assists in 1998, 2004, 2006 and 2010.[3] In 2003 he was the league's leading Israeli scorer, averaging 17.1 points per game, and he was later named the 2000–2010 Player of the Decade.[3] Tapiro explained that his passes on the move were not simply improvisation: he entered each play with a clear target, preserved two passing options while dribbling, and read pick-and-roll defenses by changing pace to choose between driving, passing and shooting.[4]
One of his most remarkable European performances came in 2002/03, when he recorded 34 points, 17 assists and 11 rebounds in Hapoel Jerusalem's 118–95 victory over Ukrainian side Odessa.[3] It was one of several triple-doubles he recorded across domestic and European competition. The previous week, he had scored a personal European high of 37 points against Telekom Ankara in a 101–91 Jerusalem win.[3] Tapiro also played through adversity: in a 2012 Maccabi Ashdod victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv, 78–73 at Nokia Arena, he said he had received two injections for a stiff back before taking the floor.[5]
04Season in France and International Career
In the 2004/05 season, Tapiro played for Nancy in France. The club won the French Cup, with Tapiro named the competition's MVP, and reached the French championship final.[6] Nancy lost the final 72–68 to Strasbourg, whose roster included Israeli player Afik Nissim, before 20,000 spectators at the Bercy arena in Paris.[6]
Tapiro played in four senior European Championships for Israel.[1] At EuroBasket 2003 in Sweden, Israel finished seventh, its best placing since 1983. Tapiro scored 26 points with three assists and three rebounds in an 88–83 ranking-game victory over Russia.[3] He later captained Israel at EuroBasket 2007 in Spain after playing a significant role in the last-chance qualifying tournament that secured the team's place.[7]
052006–07 Season and State Cup Victory
The 2006/07 campaign was among the most decorated of Tapiro's domestic career. At 32, he captained Israel at EuroBasket in Spain after helping the national team qualify through the last-chance tournament.[7] With Hapoel Jerusalem, he won the 2007 State Cup, the only Israeli title of his playing career.[3] Jerusalem also came within seconds of winning the Israeli league title that season.[7]
Tapiro moved to Bnei Hasharon in the summer of 2007 and quickly made an impact, scoring 31 points in an early victory over Ironi Nahariya.[7]
06Coaching and Management Career
After retiring, Tapiro immediately began his coaching career with Maccabi Ashdod.[8] During his first season as head coach, he guided the club to the 2017 State Cup semifinals. As a player, he had reached that stage six times and won the trophy once.[9] He subsequently coached Hapoel Eilat before moving into sports management.[8]
Tapiro spent three years as general manager and professional manager of Ironi Ness Ziona, departing in June 2021. He said that the club had reached the playoffs in each of those seasons and identified its FIBA Europe Cup victory as the defining achievement of his tenure.[8] A January 2026 report said he returned to coach Ironi Ness Ziona after a later spell of just under two years as its professional manager. The change followed four consecutive losses and the replacement of coach Amit Sharaf.[10]
In 2023, Tapiro served as head coach of Israel's 3x3 basketball team at the FIBA 3x3 Europe Cup in Jerusalem. Player Joaquin Szuchman reflected on the value of his experience: "I grew up watching him. The fact that the coach was a former player and experienced what we are experiencing now is a huge gift to be able to learn from him."[11]
07Legacy
On March 6, 2016, ynet reported that Tapiro was due to become the first player in Israeli basketball history to reach 500 Premier League appearances.[3] He retired three months later at age 41 after 21 top-flight seasons.[1] In 2023, The Jerusalem Post identified his career total as 511 appearances, the all-time league record then tied by Guy Pnini.[12]
Sport5's June 2016 retirement report credited Tapiro with 5,517 Israeli league points, 2,445 assists and 1,945 rebounds, as well as 1,098 points for the national team.[1] He also helped Maccabi Ashdod reach the Israeli league final in 2012.[13] His broader standing was reflected in his selection as the 2000–2010 Player of the Decade and in a 2022 Sport5 reader vote that chose him as the point guard in an all-2000s Israeli starting five.[2] He was also described as one of Israel's greatest-ever basketball players.[11]
08Statistical Discrepancies
Published career totals attributed to Tapiro are inconsistent. Ynet described his scheduled March 6, 2016 game as his 500th Premier League appearance.[3] Sport5's June 2016 retirement report gave a total of 520 league games,[1] while a 2022 Sport5 profile listed 511 appearances.[2]
Scoring totals also differ: ynet's March 2016 profile reported 5,452 Israeli league points, while Sport5's retirement report gave 5,517.[3][1] The cited sources do not reconcile the different totals, but each documents the exceptional longevity of Tapiro's career.
