01In brief
The Kissufim-area tank engagements are a group of distinct armored clashes and anti-tank attacks near Kibbutz Kissufim and the Kissufim outpost rather than one formally named battle. The best-documented episodes include two 77th Battalion tank actions and a deadly ambush of 450th Battalion reinforcements on October 7, 2023; continued fighting through October 12; a Hamas-claimed anti-tank ambush on October 22; and a January 22, 2024 building collapse near Kissufim after an apparent RPG attack. Earlier records document mines and patrol attacks near Kissufim in the 1950s and a 2002 bombing beneath a Merkava tank that killed Sgt. Aviad Dotan. A separate Tank No. 3 engagement occurred near the White House outpost between Nir Oz and Nirim and should not be conflated with the fighting inside Kissufim.
02Background
The Kissufim area, situated along Israel's border with the Gaza Strip, has repeatedly experienced border violence since Israel's earliest years. Official Israeli archival records document that on May 18, 1955, a mine planted near Kissufim on the Egyptian border killed two Israeli soldiers, prompting instructions to Israel's United Nations delegation and subsequent diplomatic efforts concerning shooting and mining incidents along the Gaza border.[1]
A chronology entered into the Congressional Record in February 1956 catalogued violence in the same sector. On April 24, 1954, marauders attempting to rob the Kissufim settlement were intercepted by an Israeli patrol, after which Egyptian forces from the Gaza Strip fired across the armistice line.[2] On June 8, 1954, an Israeli soldier was wounded when a patrol vehicle struck a mine near Kissufim, and on July 10, 1954, Egyptian forces attacked an Israeli unit patrolling the armistice line, killing one Israeli and wounding two others.[2]
Violence continued into 1955. An Israeli Army vehicle northwest of Kissufim was destroyed by a land mine on March 12; a command car north of Kissufim was damaged by a mine and one soldier wounded on April 1; and on May 17, three Israeli officers were killed and a fourth wounded when a patrol car west of Kissufim was destroyed by a mine, hours after another patrol had discovered a mine nearby.[2] Egyptian infiltrators destroyed a pipeline south of Kissufim and severed telephone communications to the settlement on June 19, 1955.[2]
A U.S. State Department diplomatic record dated April 6, 1956, reports that, according to an Israeli Foreign Ministry official, Egyptian forces attacked an IDF patrol near Kissufim at approximately 8:00 a.m., breaking the previous evening's cease-fire. Intensive firing continued until approximately 9:15 a.m.[3]
Decades later, on September 5, 2002, a bomb weighing more than 100 kilograms exploded beneath an Israeli Merkava tank near the Kissufim Crossing in the central Gaza Strip.[4] Sgt. Aviad Dotan, 21, of Moshav Nir Galim, was killed and three soldiers were wounded.[4][5] An umbrella group representing several Palestinian factions claimed responsibility, while a separate source attributes the attack specifically to the Popular Resistance Committees.[6]
03October 7, 2023: the Hamas Assault
At approximately 6:30 a.m. on October 7, 2023, as the "Purple Rain" mortar-and-artillery alert sounded, IDF tank crews in the Kissufim sector were called into action.[7] Two tanks from the 7th Armored Brigade's 77th Battalion moved to block additional Hamas terrorists from reaching Kissufim.[8]
One crew from the Vulcan Company of the 77th Battalion consisted of tank commander Sgt. Eyal Zapolsky, loader Sgt. Yonatan Pinto, gunner Sgt. Oren Shemesh, and driver Staff Sgt. Nadav Bohbot. Mortar rounds fell as radio reports described two simultaneous mass infiltrations, and an anti-tank missile struck their tank. Pinto was seriously wounded in both eyes, while Zapolsky was lightly wounded by shrapnel.[9] The damaged tank nonetheless reached the area of Kibbutz Nirim, where the crew reported killing approximately 60 attackers and entering and leaving the kibbutz four times.[9]
A separate crew from the 7th Brigade encountered hundreds of attackers, motorcycles, pickup trucks, and RPG fire before withdrawing toward the Kissufim outpost.[7] After receiving reports of an attack at the outpost, this crew advanced with two David combat vehicles and a Namer armored personnel carrier. At approximately 8:30 a.m., an anti-tank projectile struck the tank's driver's compartment, disabling the vehicle and wounding its original driver, Sgt. Orian Maman; Sgt. Shaked Hanuna replaced him.[7] Though immobilized and able only to traverse its turret and cannon, the crew continued firing, reporting that it struck a pickup truck carrying attackers and killed additional attackers on foot.[7]
A second tank arrived and the original commander transferred to it, leaving the remaining crew to operate independently, without any other ground force immediately available and with communications repeatedly failing.[7] At one point an attacker climbed onto the disabled tank; the gunner elevated the cannon to dislodge him, and the crew then shot and knocked him off.[7] A Namer crew arriving roughly 15 minutes later confirmed that the attacker had been killed.[7] The crew remained inside the tank for approximately 12 hours before being evacuated at around 8:00 p.m., departing with only helmets and protective vests.[7]
04The Ambush of the 450th Battalion
The first reinforcement force from the Bislamach Brigade's 450th Armored Battalion reached Kibbutz Kissufim at approximately 1:06 p.m. on October 7, joining Golani troops and the local security team.[8] A force led by the 450th Battalion commander then moved toward the northern neighborhood near the intersection with the Kissufim army base and was immediately ambushed by Hamas terrorists.[8]
The ambush killed Staff Sgt. Omri Peretz, Staff Sgt. Regev Amar, Sgt. Bar Yankilov, Sgt. Lavi Buchnik, and Sgt. Matan Malka. Five additional soldiers were wounded, including the battalion commander.[8] Egoz commandos and the Israel Air Force's Unit 669 evacuated the wounded and the bodies of the fallen.[8]
Fighting continued later that afternoon when another 450th Battalion force searched the southern neighborhood and reached the home of the civil-defense squad coordinator, where terrorists had taken cover. The terrorists opened fire from inside the building and threw grenades, killing Saar Margolis, a member of the local security team, and Staff Sgt. Adam Agmon.[8]
The IDF investigation attributed the Kissufim attack to approximately 150 Hamas Nukhba terrorists, with around 40 reaching the army base and approximately 60 reaching the kibbutz and surrounding area.[10] Forces at the army base and its surroundings were ambushed again at approximately 3:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., with additional ambushes in the kibbutz after 4:00 p.m.[10]
05Prolonged Fighting: October 8–12
Hamas terrorists remained hidden inside Kibbutz Kissufim for days after the initial assault, forcing IDF units into repeated engagements.[10] On October 8, troops used tank fire against houses where terrorists were concealed.[8] On October 9, a tank and an Air Force helicopter supported an operation that killed terrorists hiding in the kibbutz cowshed; those terrorists had murdered the kibbutz's dairy manager, Reuven Heinik, before being located.[8] Further ambushes occurred on October 10 and 12.[10] On October 12, troops killed what the investigation identified as the last remaining terrorist inside Kissufim.[8]
The IDF's inquiry into the battle found that Israeli forces did not operate according to organized or uniform techniques, that command and control inside the kibbutz was ineffective, and that task allocation was disorganized.[8] The investigation concluded that the army's reference scenario for such an attack had been fundamentally flawed and that troops had not been trained to fight inside an Israeli community overrun by terrorists. It found that these factors contributed to the prolonged battle and at least one deadly friendly-fire incident.[8]
06Tank No. 3 and the White House Outpost
A related October 7 tank engagement is sometimes associated with the Kissufim-area fighting but took place near the White House outpost, between Kibbutz Nir Oz and Kibbutz Nirim. The crew of Tank No. 3 consisted of Capt. Omer Neutra, Sgt. Nimrod Cohen, Sgt. Oz Daniel, and Sgt. Shaked Dahan.[11]
According to an account based partly on preliminary information supplied to the crew's families, Tank No. 3 was dispatched south, later turned north after an adjacent tank reported being hit, suffered a braking failure, and was ultimately disabled when attackers attached an explosive charge to it.[11] Hamas terrorists attacked the crew with RPG fire and explosive devices. Dahan was killed during the encounter, while Neutra, Cohen, and Daniel were abducted into Gaza.[12]
Neutra and Daniel were later confirmed killed, and their bodies were returned under a cease-fire agreement in late 2025. Cohen survived captivity and was released, while Dahan's body was recovered in August 2024.[12] Hamas Nukhba commander Jihad Samih Mahmoud Ismail was later identified as having participated in the encounter and in the abduction of Neutra, Daniel, and Cohen.[12]
07October 22, 2023: Anti-Tank Attack During Pre-Ground-Offensive Operations
On October 22, 2023, IDF forces operating in the Kissufim area, accompanied by tanks and engineering vehicles, conducted counterterrorism operations, cleared terrorists from the area in preparation for a ground maneuver, and gathered information about missing and abducted persons.[13] During the operation, Palestinian terrorists fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF tank and an engineering vehicle, killing one soldier and wounding three others.[13] That night, Israeli infantry attacked several targets, including terrorist and anti-tank squads.[13]
Hamas's military wing described the action as a "planned ambush" against an armored Israeli force that had crossed the fence in eastern Khan Yunis. It claimed that two bulldozers and a tank were destroyed, that the Israeli force withdrew, and that the operatives returned unharmed.[13] Those vehicle-loss and withdrawal claims originated with Hamas and were not independently confirmed.[13]
During the same operation, IDF fighters found a school bag left by Hamas operatives in the Kissufim area; inspection determined that it was booby-trapped and contained seven kilograms, approximately 15.4 pounds, of explosives prepared for remote detonation.[13] Israeli forces also captured a terrorist who had remained inside Israeli territory since the October 7 attack.[13]
08January 22, 2024: Building Collapse Near Kissufim
A major incident near Kissufim occurred on January 22, 2024, approximately 600 meters from the Israeli border across from Kibbutz Kissufim.[14] Israeli soldiers were removing terrorist infrastructure and preparing buildings for demolition in order to create a secure area from which Hamas could not fire on Israeli communities.[14] Hamas operatives apparently fired an RPG at a tank securing the soldiers; an explosion then caused two adjacent buildings to collapse, killing 21 soldiers.[14] The precise cause of the explosion remained under investigation at the time of the initial reporting.[14]
The incident formed part of a single day in which 24 IDF soldiers were killed in southern Gaza: 21 in the building-collapse incident near Kissufim and three paratrooper officers in a separate operation west of Khan Yunis.[14][15] The building collapse accounted for 21 of the IDF's 24 deaths that day, which was reported as the military's highest daily death toll since the Gaza ground campaign began.[15]
09Aftermath and Casualties
The IDF investigation into the October 7 fighting at and around Kissufim reported 27 IDF soldiers and one member of the local security team killed in the fighting at the kibbutz and nearby army post.[8] It also reported nine Israeli civilians and six foreign workers murdered in the kibbutz, one Israeli civilian mistakenly killed by Israeli forces, and approximately 70 Israelis wounded.[8]
Among the soldiers whose deaths are specifically documented in the October 7 fighting, Staff Sgt. Omri Peretz, Staff Sgt. Regev Amar, Sgt. Bar Yankilov, Sgt. Lavi Buchnik, Sgt. Matan Malka, and Staff Sgt. Adam Agmon were killed in the ambushes and house-clearing operations.[8] Kibbutz security-team member Saar Margolis and dairy manager Reuven Heinik were among the civilians killed.[8]
The crew of Tank No. 3 suffered the death of Sgt. Shaked Dahan at the White House outpost, while Capt. Omer Neutra, Sgt. Oz Daniel, and Sgt. Nimrod Cohen were abducted. Neutra and Daniel were later confirmed killed and their bodies were returned in late 2025; Cohen survived captivity and was released.[12]
10Historiography and Disputed Accounts
The available sources do not establish "Kissufim tank ambush" as the formal title of a single engagement. Reporting distinguishes the immobilized 77th Battalion tank at the Kissufim outpost from the damaged Vulcan Company tank that fought near Nirim.[7][9] It treats the 450th Battalion ambush inside Kissufim as another action within the wider October 7 battle.[8] Tank No. 3, meanwhile, was positioned at the White House outpost between Nir Oz and Nirim rather than inside Kissufim.[11] The October 22 Hamas-claimed ambush and the January 22 building collapse were later, separate incidents.[13][14]
Hamas's claims regarding the October 22 operation—that two bulldozers and a tank were destroyed and that Israeli forces withdrew—have not been independently confirmed and should be treated as attributed rather than established facts.[13] The cause of the January 22, 2024 explosion and the precise sequence involving the RPG strike, the tank, and the two collapsing buildings were still under investigation at the time of the initial reporting.[14][15]
Responsibility attribution for the September 5, 2002 Merkava bombing also differs between sources. Two casualty listings describe responsibility as claimed by an umbrella group representing several Palestinian factions, while a separate profile attributes the attack specifically to the Popular Resistance Committees.[4][6] The account of Tank No. 3's mechanical problems and movements was based partly on preliminary information supplied to the crew's families before a full official investigation had been presented to them.[11]

Fighting later that afternoon in the southern neighborhood killed kibbutz security-team member Saar Margolis and Staff Sgt. Adam Agmon.
How long did Hamas terrorists remain inside Kibbutz Kissufim after the initial October 7 attack, and what did the IDF investigation find?
Hamas terrorists remained hidden inside Kibbutz Kissufim for days, with troops killing what the investigation identified as the last remaining terrorist on October 12. The IDF's inquiry found that Israeli forces did not operate according to organized or uniform techniques, that command and control inside the kibbutz was ineffective, and that task allocation was disorganized. The investigation concluded that the army's reference scenario for such an attack had been fundamentally flawed and that troops had not been trained to fight inside an Israeli community overrun by terrorists, contributing to the prolonged battle and at least one deadly friendly-fire incident.
What were the overall casualties from the October 7 fighting at and around Kissufim?
The IDF investigation into the October 7 fighting at and around Kissufim reported 27 IDF soldiers and one member of the local security team killed in the fighting at the kibbutz and nearby army post. The investigation also reported nine Israeli civilians and six foreign workers murdered in the kibbutz, one Israeli civilian mistakenly killed by Israeli forces, and approximately 70 Israelis wounded.
What happened near Kissufim on January 22, 2024?
On January 22, 2024, approximately 600 meters from the Israeli border across from Kibbutz Kissufim, Hamas operatives apparently fired an RPG at a tank securing soldiers who were removing terrorist infrastructure and preparing buildings for demolition. An explosion caused two adjacent buildings to collapse, killing 21 soldiers. The incident was reported as the IDF's highest daily death toll since the Gaza ground campaign began, accounting for 21 of the military's 24 deaths that day.
Why should Tank No. 3's engagement not be considered part of the Kissufim fighting?
Tank No. 3's engagement took place near the White House outpost, between Kibbutz Nir Oz and Kibbutz Nirim, rather than inside Kissufim. The crew — Capt. Omer Neutra, Sgt. Nimrod Cohen, Sgt. Oz Daniel, and Sgt. Shaked Dahan — was dispatched to that separate location, where Dahan was killed and the other three were abducted into Gaza. Reporting treats this as a related but distinct October 7 engagement that should not be conflated with the fighting inside Kissufim.
