Itay Shechter

Published

01In brief

Itay Shechter is an Israeli former professional footballer who played as a forward in Israel, Germany, England, and France and made 27 appearances for Israel’s senior national team. Raised in Ramat Yishai, he won Israeli league championships and State Cups during a career of nearly 20 years. His prominent European moments included scoring for Hapoel Tel Aviv against Red Bull Salzburg and celebrating by putting on a red kippah. Shechter retired on April 18, 2024, at age 37 after a knee injury ended his final season with Hapoel Petah Tikva.

02Early Life

Shechter grew up in Ramat Yishai in northern Israel. In his retirement statement, he recalled pursuing football by playing barefoot on hot asphalt and spending hours repeatedly shooting at an unguarded goal.[1]

He played youth football for Hapoel Haifa and Hapoel Nazareth Illit and made his first professional appearance for Nazareth Illit at age 18.[4] His senior career began with the club, later renamed Hapoel Nof HaGalil, in the 2005/06 season.[2] He joined Maccabi Netanya in 2006 after attracting attention during his first professional campaign.[4]

03Career

After three years with Maccabi Netanya, Shechter moved to Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2009 for a reported $500,000.[4][2] He scored 26 goals in 45 league appearances over his first two seasons with Hapoel and helped the club win the 2009/10 league-and-cup double.[2] Hapoel also reached the Europa League knockout stage that season. In 2010/11, it advanced to the Champions League group stage and finished second in the Israeli league.[5]

A 2011 profile recorded 52 goals in 159 career matches for Shechter at that point.[5] He left Hapoel for 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the summer of 2011 and scored his first Bundesliga goal in the second match of the 2011/12 season. His 80th-minute strike, scored after evading two defenders, rescued a 1–1 home draw against Augsburg.[6] Shechter said afterward, “Since I started playing football, my dream was to score in the Bundesliga.”[6]

04European Competitions and Overseas Clubs

One of Shechter’s most widely reported European moments came during Hapoel Tel Aviv’s Champions League qualifying playoff against Red Bull Salzburg in August 2010. He scored Hapoel’s third goal in a 3–2 away victory and then put on a red kippah, receiving a yellow card as commotion broke out in the stands.[3] Longtime Hapoel supporter Moshe Zinger said he had given Shechter the knitted kippah at the airport after seeing him at a Chabad prayer station.[3] Another account reported that Shechter had carried it in his sock before the celebration.[7]

Shechter spent two years with Kaiserslautern, including a loan spell at Swansea City during his second season in Germany. He returned to Hapoel Tel Aviv for 2013/14 and then played a season with Nantes in France before returning to Israel.[2] His subsequent clubs included Maccabi Haifa, Beitar Jerusalem, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Be’er Sheva, and Hapoel Petah Tikva. He won two league championships and a State Cup with Maccabi Tel Aviv and another State Cup with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.[2]

Hapoel Petah Tikva was Shechter’s final club. A knee injury suffered in a State Cup quarterfinal against Hapoel Be’er Sheva ended his season earlier than planned. He announced his retirement on April 18, 2024, saying that although his heart wanted to continue, his body had indicated otherwise after numerous injuries.[1]

05Legacy

Shechter represented Israel at every youth level and made 27 senior international appearances over eight years, scoring five goals.[1] His major Israeli honors included the 2009/10 league championship with Hapoel Tel Aviv, consecutive championships with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2019 and 2020, and four State Cups during his career.[2][8]

Ynet identified Shechter as one of the relatively few players to represent five prominent Israeli clubs: Hapoel Tel Aviv, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Maccabi Haifa, Beitar Jerusalem, and Hapoel Be’er Sheva. It also credited him with drawing 35 Israeli Premier League penalties, described as the league’s highest total.[8] At retirement, Shechter emphasized the breadth of a career that had lasted nearly 20 years and included the Israeli, German, English, and French leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League.[1]

06Controversies

Two incidents during Shechter’s overseas career drew attention beyond football. In 2012, The Times of Israel reported that supporters directed antisemitic abuse at him before a Kaiserslautern match, although Shechter reportedly did not hear it. Kaiserslautern supporters displayed Israeli flags at the following match in a public show of support.[9]

In 2013, The Times of Israel reported that Shechter was prevented from joining Swansea City’s six-day training visit to Dubai because of the United Arab Emirates’ policy at the time toward visits by Israeli citizens.[10]

07Career Statistics

Published accounts differ on Shechter’s career goal total. Ynet credited him with 147 goals in all competitions over 19 seasons, while Sport5 reported 151, broken down as 113 league goals, 13 cup goals, six league-cup goals, nine goals in European club competitions, five senior international goals, and five youth-international goals.[8][1]

Some figures also reflect when an article was published. A 2011 profile listed Shechter with 52 goals in 159 career matches and nine senior international appearances with three goals; by retirement, his national-team total stood at 27 appearances and five goals.[5][1] Ynet’s retirement report described him as winning 13 titles in Israel plus Swansea City’s League Cup, although the same report’s opening referred to 13 titles without clarifying whether the Swansea trophy was included.[8]
