01In brief
Eden Shamir is an Israeli midfielder who signed for Ironi Tiberias in August 2026, making it his seventh career club. He began in Hapoel Haifa’s youth system before moving to Kiryat Shmona, where he spent six years and became captain. His first goal for Maccabi Tel Aviv was a late winner against Shakhtar Karagandy in European qualifying in August 2021. His career has also included spells with Hapoel Beersheba, Standard Liège, Maccabi Petah Tikva and Bnei Sakhnin.
02Early Life
Shamir was born in Kiryat Motzkin and began playing football with Hapoel Haifa.[2] After completing the Na'arim Alef age group, he moved to Kiryat Shmona, undergoing a one-year transfer restriction to make the move.[2]
By 2014, when he was about 19, Shamir had made roughly ten Israeli Premier League appearances during the preceding season.[2] He also came on as a late substitute in the State Cup final, which Kiryat Shmona won against Maccabi Netanya.[2]
03Career
Shamir developed into Kiryat Shmona’s captain over six years at the club.[3] In March 2017, he opened the scoring against Hapoel Tel Aviv with a fifth-minute goal, although his side ultimately lost 3–2.[5] That December, he scored in the 37th minute of a 4–0 victory over Hapoel Acre, Kiryat Shmona’s biggest win of the season to that point.[6] In January 2018, his 32nd-minute goal contributed to a 2–1 away victory over Bnei Sakhnin, giving Kiryat Shmona a second consecutive win.[7]
By January 2019, Shamir was captaining the team.[8] Against Hapoel Haifa that month, he scored from inside the penalty area early in the second half to put Kiryat Shmona ahead, but the match ended 1–1.[8] He moved to Hapoel Beersheba that summer and had already scored two important goals in Europa League qualifying by the time of a preseason player ranking.[3]
His arrival at Beersheba formed part of coach Barak Bachar’s rebuilding of the squad for the 2019–20 season, after the club had lost the league title following three consecutive championships.[9] In October 2019, Shamir headed in a ball supplied by Miguel Victor shortly before halftime during a 3–0 victory over Hapoel Haifa.[10]
In January 2020, Shamir joined Standard Liège in Belgium on a three-year contract.[11] Recalling the move in a 2024 interview, he described a difficult beginning: he arrived shortly before the COVID-19 shutdown, which halted training and matches and left him living abroad under lockdown.[11] He later returned to Israel on loan to Maccabi Tel Aviv, a decision he said followed changes at Liège and one he did not regret.[11]
In August 2021, Shamir scored his first goal for Maccabi Tel Aviv in a European qualifying match against Shakhtar Karagandy.[4] Maccabi had fallen behind before recovering to win 2–1, with Shamir scoring the decisive goal in the 77th minute.[12] Afterward, he emphasized the collective result: “I’m very happy to have scored the goal and that as a team we won the game. I believe that is what is most important and makes my debut that much better. The goal was just a bonus.”[4]
Shamir later characterized his Maccabi spell as personally successful, saying that he scored eight goals across all competitions and played regularly, although competition for places sometimes restricted his appearances.[11] He wanted to remain at the club, but Maccabi did not exercise its purchase option from Standard Liège.[11] He recalled the option as being worth approximately €500,000–€600,000.[11]
One particularly memorable match came against Maccabi Haifa in January 2022, when Shamir scored to give Tel Aviv a 2–0 lead before Haifa recovered to win 3–2.[11] He recalled sustaining a knee injury during the late sequence that left him with a scar, and hearing the crowd roar before he understood what had happened.[11] In his recollection, the dramatic ending overshadowed what had otherwise been a strong performance.[11]
Back at Hapoel Beersheba, Shamir scored in the 63rd minute of a 4–0 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv in January 2024, after the opposition had been reduced to ten players.[13] His Beersheba contract subsequently ended, and he joined Maccabi Petah Tikva as a free agent in August 2024 on a two-year deal.[14]
Shamir said he had expected Beersheba to extend his contract, but no formal offer materialized.[11] He noted that the club’s extension option ran until June 15, following the State Cup final on May 30.[11] He thought the final and subsequent coaching changes might have influenced the decision, while emphasizing that he did not know the club’s reasons and held no grievance against it.[11] Discussing his wish to win more trophies, he remarked: “Titles don’t run away from me; I just arrive late.”[11]
After one season at Maccabi Petah Tikva, Shamir and the club mutually agreed to end his contract.[15] He signed a one-season deal with Bnei Sakhnin in July 2025.[15] During the following season, he made 29 appearances, scored twice and provided one assist.[1] In August 2026, he signed for Ironi Tiberias for one season with an option for another, making Tiberias his seventh career club.[1]
04International Career
Shamir was part of Israel’s under-19 squad in 2014, when a 1–0 victory over Georgia secured qualification for the European championship.[16]
By his October 2024 interview, he had made one senior appearance for Israel, in a friendly against Hungary.[11] He said that he had hoped for further call-ups, particularly during periods when he felt he was playing well, and that the ambition to return to the national team motivated him to prove himself.[11]
05Legacy
An early 2014 profile described Shamir as a quiet, steady and responsible midfielder and noted that he scored five goals from a deep position in the preceding season.[2] By 2019, after six years at Kiryat Shmona, he had become club captain before moving to Hapoel Beersheba.[3] Reflecting on his career in 2024, Shamir said he believed he could have reached a higher level but did not allow that sense of missed potential to define him; he also expressed a continuing ambition to win more trophies.[11]
