The project's origins trace to 2011, following IBM Watson's victory on the American quiz program Jeopardy!, when IBM began searching for its next major AI challenge; the Debater project was selected in 2012.[5] Haifa-based leaders included project manager Ronit Aharonov, principal investigator Noam Slonim, and Israeli research-team head Oded Cohen, who guided the system's six-year development.[5]

Project Debater was engineered to generate data-driven opinions in complete sentences, listen to continuous human speech and identify key claims, and articulate principled arguments around human dilemmas. Researchers supplied the system with approximately 300 million articles containing roughly 10 billion sentences.[5] At a public demonstration in San Francisco, the system debated humans on telemedicine and reportedly changed the minds of nine audience members.[5] At a later presentation at IBM's Givataim offices, it debated mass surveillance and genetic engineering; the mass-surveillance debate ended in a tie, while Project Debater scored higher than its human opponent on knowledge and speech clarity in the genetic-engineering debate.[5]

08Cybersecurity Research and the Trusteer Acquisition

IBM significantly expanded its Israeli cybersecurity research footprint in 2013 following its acquisition of the Israeli cybersecurity company Trusteer. IBM announced a dedicated cybersecurity software laboratory in Israel that would combine more than 200 Trusteer and IBM researchers and developers.[15] Its focus areas included mobile and application security, advanced threats, malware, counter-fraud, and financial crimes, and it was presented as an addition to IBM's existing Israeli R&D facilities.[15]

Trusteer's technology focused on detecting threats that traditional security software might miss, including smartphone malware capable of enabling fraudulent transactions or account takeover.
