01In brief
Ani'am is a moshav shitufi in the central Golan Heights, situated above the Yehudiya Nature Reserve and overlooking the Sea of Galilee. Founded in 1978, it is administered through the Golan Regional Council. The Central Bureau of Statistics recorded 499 residents in 2022. Ani'am contains the only artists' village in the Golan Heights, a pedestrian complex of studios, galleries, and eateries developed on former grazing land.
02Overview
Ani'am is a moshav shitufi affiliated with Tnu'at HaMoshavim, the Moshavim Movement, and falls within the jurisdiction of the Golan Regional Council.[1] The Central Bureau of Statistics classifies the locality in the North district and Golan subdistrict.[3]
The moshav is located in the central Golan Heights, above the Yehudiya Nature Reserve and with views toward the Sea of Galilee.[2] Its location and artists' complex connect the residential community with the Golan's broader tourism economy.
03History
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967.[6] Israel extended Israeli law to the territory in 1981.[7] Ani'am was founded in 1978, during the period of Israeli administration between those events.[1]
A 2004 report described Ani'am as a community of approximately 80 families. Plans for its expansion at the time included an artists' village, a sports center, and a vacation village.[2] The artists' village was the portion of those plans documented as having been realized.
Resident artists began discussions with the Jewish Agency in 1999. The project's foundation stone was laid in 2000, and its first buildings opened in 2004, when the artists began promoting the complex to visitors.[5]
04Demographics
Ani'am had 379 residents on December 31, 2004, according to the Encyclopaedia Judaica locality table.[1] The Central Bureau of Statistics recorded 515 residents in 2020.[8] Its 2022 file recorded a total population of 499, including 483 residents classified as Jewish.[3]
The available figures therefore show substantial growth from 2004, followed by a modest decline between 2020 and 2022.
05Economy and Culture
The artists' village was conceived both as a source of employment for artists living in Ani'am and as a tourism destination. Its development responded to a shortage of appropriate workspaces: the moshav's homes were close together, while residents' agricultural plots lay on its outskirts. Before dedicated studios opened, one artist worked in an old dental clinic and others used bomb shelters as improvised workspaces.[5]
The complex supports artists working in goldsmithing, silversmithing, painting, pottery, ceramic and stone sculpture, textiles, mosaics, metalwork, Judaica, woodwork, and other crafts. It also includes businesses selling handmade chocolate, soaps, and candles.[4][9] Artists interviewed in 2017 expressed a desire to attract more visitors while preserving the village's quiet character, particularly on weekdays.[5]
The same report documented an unresolved property and status issue from the artists' perspective. They said the buildings had been constructed with their own labor and money but were not registered in their names with the Israel Land Administration. An arrangement eventually allowed properties to be rented, although former residents who wanted to sell reportedly remained unable to do so because they lacked registered ownership.[5]
06Notable Sites
Ani'am's principal visitor site is its artists' village, built as an open pedestrian street lined with colorful houses constructed by the artists.[5][9] Visitors can enter workshops and observe artists working in their studios.[4] Gallery-shops, craft vendors, restaurants, cafés, a fish spa, and businesses offering Judaica and gourmet chocolate operate within the complex.[4][9]
A 2017 account counted 15 galleries and two restaurants and also described a flea market and workshops open to visitors.[5] It reported that Passover and Sukkot were the village's busiest periods, when tour buses traveling through the Golan brought groups to the moshav, while ordinary weekdays were considerably quieter.[5]
The locality's position above the Yehudiya Nature Reserve, with views toward the Sea of Galilee, forms part of its wider appeal as a Golan destination.[2]
07Sovereignty and Political Status
Ani'am's location in the Golan Heights places it within a territory whose international status remains contested. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and extended Israeli law to the territory in 1981.[6][7] UN Security Council Resolution 497 declared the 1981 measure "null and void and without international legal effect."[7]
Encyclopaedia Britannica characterizes Israel's 1981 action as a unilateral annexation and states that it is not internationally recognized except by the United States. It describes the broader international consensus as continuing to regard the Golan Heights as part of Syria.[10]
In March 2019, European Union foreign-policy chief Federica Mogherini stated that the EU did not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Her statement followed the United States' recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the territory that same month.[6]
