Founded in 1950 by pioneers who had immigrated from Tunisia, it is affiliated with Tenu'at ha-Moshavim and administered by the Lev HaSharon Regional Council. Some of its agricultural buildings were donated by the government of Norway following the crash of an airplane carrying Youth Aliyah children to Israel, and the moshav's school is named for the 28 people killed in the accident.
02Overview and Location
Yanuv lies in Southern Sharon near Kfar Yona.[1] A Jewish cemetery directory gives a Yanuv listing at approximate coordinates of 34.938° east longitude and 32.308° north latitude.[4] The moshav lies within Israel's Central District and Sharon subdistrict and is administered by the Lev HaSharon Regional Council.[2]
The locality's average elevation was listed as 46 meters in 2020.[5] Yanuv can be reached from Route 57 through the HaSharon–Nitzanei Oz junction.[3] Its Israel Central Bureau of Statistics locality code is 0753.[6]
03History
Yanuv was established in 1950 by a group of pioneers who had immigrated from Tunisia.[3] A separate Southern Sharon settlement table likewise records 1950 as its founding year.[1]
Yanuv's history includes a connection to a fatal aviation accident in Norway. An airplane carrying Youth Aliyah children to Israel crashed on Norwegian soil, killing 28 people. Following the accident, the Norwegian government donated some of the moshav's agricultural buildings, and Yanuv's school was named for the victims.[3]
On February 11, 1958, terrorists killed a resident of a moshav identified in a historical timeline as “Yanov” near Kfar Yona. The spelling differs from the modern transliteration “Yanuv.”[7]
04Demographics
Yanuv's recorded population rose from 753 on December 31, 2004 to 869 on December 31, 2019.[1][6] The Central Bureau of Statistics recorded 930 residents in 2020, including 918 Jews.[5]
The cited 2022 locality file records a total population of 937. All 937 residents were classified in the combined category “Jews and others,” including 925 Jews, and the row recorded no Arab population.[2] The figures therefore do not support describing every resident as Jewish.
05Economy and Culture
As a moshav, Yanuv is affiliated with Tenu'at ha-Moshavim.[1] Its agricultural character is reflected in the farm buildings donated by the Norwegian government following the Youth Aliyah airplane disaster. The naming of the local school for the accident's 28 victims also preserves that event in the community's institutional memory.[3]
06Notable Sites
At the center of Yanuv stands a memorial commemorating residents who fell in Israel's wars and military campaigns.[3] The monument occupies a paved area in a pine grove and consists of a wall of dressed Jerusalem stone, black marble panels inscribed with the names and details of the fallen, basalt panels, and Israeli flags. The site is publicly accessible.[3]
Sergeant Yonatan Peleg, a 19-year-old resident of Yanuv, was killed in the Hamas suicide bombing at a bus stop in Tzrifin on September 9, 2003. Nine people were killed and fourteen were wounded in the attack. Peleg was survived by his parents, a brother, and two sisters.[8]
