01In brief
Ran Danker (born January 7, 1984) is an Israeli actor, singer, and model. He rose to prominence in 2004 as the lead in the musical television series Hashir Shelanu and subsequently worked in film, stage musicals, and recorded music. Describing the message of his 2018 solo album, he said he wanted “to let people touch themselves more deeply and to be brave to express themselves.” His later career included the 2021 hit “Bayit Meshuga’im,” television talent-show judging, and a 2025 announcement that he would leave The Next Star to take a leading role in the Cameri Theatre production of Cabaret.
02Early Life
Danker was born in Virginia, United States, to actor Eli Danker, and moved to Israel with his mother in 1986.[1] His birth name was Khalil; he chose the name Ran at the age of six.[1]
Music and acting interested him from a young age.[3] After school, he played and recorded rock music with friends in a home studio, with Led Zeppelin among their influences.[3] Before pursuing auditions, he studied acting privately with Eyal Cohen.[3] He also served as a helicopter technician for approximately a year and a half, leaving the position because of medical problems.[1]
03Career
Danker’s first major television role was Zohar Lahav, a singing kibbutznik, in Hashir Shelanu (Our Song), which began in 2004.[3] He entered the audition process relatively late, when the production was seeking someone who could both sing and act.[3] The series also brought him his first professional studio recording, its theme song, “Od Me’at.”[3] He appeared in the series until its conclusion in 2007.[1]
His early recording work included “בינתיים” (“Meanwhile”), performed with Ninet Tayeb on the 2005 album השיר שלנו (Our Song).[7] The catalog credits both performers with writing and composing the song.[7] Danker also appeared in The Sound of Music in 2005 and participated in the Festigal productions of 2005 and 2006.[1][2] The 2006 collection פסטיגל גיבורי הממלכה האבודה (Festigal: Heroes of the Lost Kingdom), released by Solan Productions, associates him with the songs “פסטיגל פנטזיה” and “לב אמיץ.”[8]
In August 2007, Danker released the collaborative album Shavim with musician Ilai Botner.[1] The two became close while making the album, which included Danker’s early songwriting.[4] On the album’s track “בואי נעזוב” (“Let’s Leave”), Danker is credited as a performer, while Botner is credited as composer, writer, arranger, and performer.[9] The duo was named “Group of the Year” in the 2008 annual Hebrew-language song charts of Reshet Gimmel and Galgalatz.[1]
Danker took the leading role in the television series Danny Hollywood, which began in 2008, and appeared in the films Restless (2008), Eyes Wide Open (2009), and the Israeli horror film Rabies (2010).[2] For Restless, he read scenes with Moshe Ivgy several times before being cast as Tzach, the son.[10] The director recalled that Danker had prepared carefully and worked hard, and chose him despite reservations from others about his background as a soap-opera actor.[10] The director’s daughters were already enthusiastic viewers of Hashir Shelanu, cutting Danker’s photographs out of magazines and celebrating an autograph their father brought home.[10]
Danker later took an extended break from the Israeli entertainment industry, spending two exploratory years in New York.[4][11] He described the break as a natural response to entering a fast-paced, competitive industry at a young age, and as time needed for himself and for developing what he wanted to express musically.[11] He also explained that theater, television, or movies alone could not express all the different sides of his artistic interests.[4] His song “Dejemos” was released in 2015.[4]
His 2018 solo album, Something Else, followed the collaboration with Botner by approximately eleven years.[11] Its songs drew on different periods of his life and on his personal journal; he called the album a “biographical skeleton.”[12] He described its musical sound as “a bit of rock, some electronic and mostly Israeli – not in the lyrics, mostly in the music.”[4] The album was launched at a closed event in a circus venue in Ramat Gan.[12] Danker chose the setting for its different atmosphere and theatrical quality.[12]
In 2021, “Bayit Meshuga’im” (“Crazy House”), made with producers Jordi and Ron Biton, became a major hit after a long period in which Danker had not released music.[5] He said its subject matter drew on questions people asked him about his sexuality and career, and that it reached the top of radio charts and listening rankings across platforms.[5] Another 2021 recording, “מי בחלומך” (“Who in Your Dream”), credits him as a performer and composer, as well as a contributor to additional programming; its recorded runtime is two minutes and 52 seconds.[13]
Danker joined the judging panel of The Next Star in 2022.[14] The show reunited him professionally with Ninet Tayeb.[14] In discussing advice for young contestants, he emphasized expecting uncertainty, continuing to create, and remaining flexible while building a career beyond a television competition.[14] In July 2025, he announced his departure after roughly three and a half years on the panel to take a leading role in the Cameri Theatre production of Cabaret.[6] He described Cabaret as a dream role and explained that its rehearsal and performance schedule required him to leave the judging position.[6]
Danker publicly discussed his attraction to both women and men in 2015.[5] In a later interview, he described himself as bisexual in his attraction while emphasizing that sexuality and attraction were more complex than fixed categories.[5] He said he had spoken publicly when he felt ready and opposed pressuring people to come out before they were prepared.[5] He also said that “Bayit Meshuga’im” helped him feel that his relationship with former Hashir Shelanu co-star Ninet Tayeb had reached a more relaxed, friendly place.[5]
In October 2023, Danker and his partner, director Itay Weiser, had a daughter, Or, through surrogacy.[15] Danker said her name, meaning “light,” reflected the circumstances of her birth during the Israel–Hamas war, describing the birth as “a moment of light from the darkness.”[15] During the first week after October 7, he sang while donating blood at Tel Hashomer hospital and performed Arik Einstein’s “I Have Love and It Will Win” for evacuees at a special center.[16] He also appeared on the army music station Galgalatz to perform songs requested by listeners.[16]
04Legacy
Danker’s career has crossed musical television, film, stage performance, and recorded music.[1][2] He received a Golden Screen Award for his performance in Hashir Shelanu and won Channel 24/Children’s Channel Actor of the Year awards in 2006 and 2007.[1][2] His collaboration with Botner on Shavim brought the pair 2008 “Group of the Year” honors, while “Bayit Meshuga’im” marked a later period of solo success in 2021.[1][5]
