Maccabi Ironi Bat Yam F.C.

Published

01In brief

Maccabi Ironi Bat Yam F.C. is an Israeli association football club based in Bat Yam. Around the end of the 2000s, it climbed from Liga Alef through Liga Artzit and into the second-tier National League, reaching the latter after one season in the third tier during a league expansion. On 1 January 2010, Bat Yam began a match as National League leader, but a disputed 96th-minute goal in a 2–1 loss to Ironi Kiryat Shmona knocked it from first place. The club later returned to the lower divisions and was registered for Liga Gimel in the 2024/25 season.

02Rise Through the Divisions

In the 2008/09 season, Ironi Bat Yam competed in Liga Artzit, Israel's third tier, as a newcomer promoted from Liga Alef.[1] Coach Yaakov Benudis set promotion to the National League as the club's explicit goal, a target he described as a major achievement given that Bat Yam had been playing in the fourth-tier Liga Bet only three years earlier.[2] The squad that season blended veterans and young players under tight financial constraints — all players had passed budget-control review — and included arrivals such as defensive midfielder Natan Shakuri from Hapoel Kfar Saba, Felix Halfon from Hapoel Rishon LeZion, and Liran Almog, a young defender-midfielder developed in Maccabi Tel Aviv's youth system.[2]

Bat Yam's promotion came after just one season in Liga Artzit, aided by the league's expansion, which granted automatic elevation to the top seven finishers.[1] Its preceding Liga Artzit campaign was described as mediocre, but the club had achieved its objective and was presented as the unified football representative of the city.[1]

03National League Years

Bat Yam's National League tenure produced at least one memorable high point. On 1 January 2010, the club entered its fixture against second-placed Ironi Kiryat Shmona as league leaders.[3] Maor Assor equalized in the 82nd minute with a free kick after Kiryat Shmona had taken the lead, but Salah Hasarma headed in a corner in the 96th minute to seal a 2–1 win for Kiryat Shmona and displace Bat Yam from the top of the table.[3] Manager Doron Maman and Bat Yam's players protested that the decisive corner had been allowed after added time should have expired.[3]

On 16 March 2012, Ironi Bat Yam defeated Hapoel Jerusalem 3–1, with Adi Kalifa equalizing in the 62nd minute before Yitzhak Ben Salomon struck twice — in the 63rd and 75th minutes — to secure the points after Adam Mizrahi had given Jerusalem an early lead.[4] By May 2012, however, the club was near the bottom of the National League table.[5] Its leading scorer at that point was 22-year-old striker Ran Ben Shimon, on loan from M.S. Ashdod, who had accumulated 13 league goals and netted the winner against Hapoel Herzliya the day before the profile appeared.[5] Ben Shimon was also the son of the club's coach, Miro Ben Shimon.[5] Journalists and supporters sometimes mistook him for the namesake coach who had just won the Israeli championship with Kiryat Shmona.[5]

The club's National League period was also marked by personal tragedy. In October 2011, chairman Ami Blulu died after spending two weeks unconscious following a serious fall that caused head injuries.[6] Club owner Yossi Alkobi paid tribute to Blulu's years of service and his role in moving the club forward.[6] The squad honored his memory by wearing black armbands and observing a minute of silence before their scheduled match that same day.[6]

04Relegation and Later History

By September 2012, Bat Yam was preparing to play in Liga Alef South, then the third tier of Israeli football.[7][8] Preparations were described as difficult, with the club's leadership making repeated visits to the budget-control authority amid uncertainty over whether the team would compete at the National League or Liga Alef level.[7] Manager Doron Maman oversaw signings including Shaul Samedja, Ziv Kaveda, Guy Toubiyak and Asi Brazilio, with the stated aim of returning to the National League as quickly as possible.[7]

In October 2012, former Israel international striker Pini Balili signed for Bat Yam.[8] After four rounds of the 2012/13 Liga Alef South season, the club sat second in the table, level on points with leaders Maccabi Sha'arayim and separated only by goal difference.[8] At the end of the regular season, Bat Yam was among the Liga Alef South playoff teams.[9] It had drawn 1–1 with Hapoel Marmorek, with Ron Kuperli scoring in the 61st minute, while Hapoel Katamon secured the league's automatic promotion place to the National League.[9]

The club's subsequent trajectory led further down the pyramid. For the 2024/25 season, Maccabi Ironi Bat Yam was one of 27 newly registered clubs joining Liga Gimel, then Israel's fifth and lowest tier.[10] In 2025, Bat Yam competed in Liga Gimel's lower playoff bracket and suffered a 5–3 home defeat to M.C. Tommy Tel Aviv.[11] Yaniv Salem, Aviv Ben-Melech and Or Balestra scored for Bat Yam, while the victory was Tommy Tel Aviv's ninth in 22 matches.[11]
