Hutzot HaMifratz Railway Station

Published

01In brief

Hutzot HaMifratz (Hebrew: חוצות המפרץ) is a railway station in the Haifa Bay area of northern Israel, located on the suburban rail corridor linking Haifa with the Krayot towns to the north. Opened in October 2001 adjacent to the Hutzot HaMifratz commercial center and the Israel Air Force Technical School, the station is notable for having been financed by a private developer — a partnership involving the Ofer brothers, Kur Properties, and Ashtrom — enabling Israel Railways to expand its network without direct budgetary outlay. It is recognized by the Israel Airports Authority as one of the closest rail stations to Haifa Airport. Ministry of Transport data also list active Metronit stops bearing the Hutzot HaMifratz name near the station area.

02Overview

Hutzot HaMifratz station sits in the Haifa Bay area of northern Israel, north of Haifa and beside the Israel Air Force Technical School.[1] It takes its name from the Hutzot HaMifratz commercial center immediately adjacent to it. The Israeli government's railway-project map places it within the existing Haifa and northern Israel network, listing it alongside stations such as Haifa Center HaShmona, Kiryat Motzkin, and Acre, while distinguishing it from the nearby Merkazit HaMifratz and Kiryat Haim stations.[2]

Public-transport stop coordinates recorded by the Ministry of Transport place stops named Hutzot HaMifratz at approximately 32.806059°N, 35.056745°E and 32.805962°N, 35.056514°E.[3] The Israel Airports Authority identifies the station as one of the three closest rail stations to Haifa Airport — alongside Lev Hamifratz and Kiryat Haim — and notes that travelers can continue from the station area to the airport by private vehicle, taxi, or Egged bus 58.[4]

03History

The station opened in October 2001, constructed with financing from the private development company A.K.A. Development, owned by the Ofer brothers, Kur Properties, and Ashtrom.[1] At the time of its opening, Israel Railways CEO Amos Uzani argued that relying on private-developer financing enabled the railway to advance planned investments despite budgetary constraints, while giving passengers better access to commercial centers, leisure destinations, and workplaces.[1]

At opening, the station was scheduled to serve 45 trains per day and to function as an additional stop on the suburban railway between Haifa and the Krayot.[1] Its original facilities included two platforms connected by an underground passage, elevators, a passenger hall, ticket windows, a refreshment kiosk, and automatic entrance gates.[1]

04Facilities

A 2005 station review found that Hutzot HaMifratz offered a free adjacent parking lot, an electric boarding device and elevators for passengers with disabilities, and accessible restrooms.[5] The station also had a refreshment kiosk, clean restrooms, timetable information sheets, and a ticket machine.[5]

The same review noted several limitations: the nearest public transportation stop was approximately 200 meters away at Vulcan Junction, the information desk was unstaffed during the visit, and no public-address announcements were heard.[5] Ministry of Transport records list active public-transport stops named Hutzot HaMifratz on Metronit routes 1, 2, 3, and 444 near the station area, indicating that interchange connectivity has since developed; the workbook does not explicitly identify the stops as railway-station facilities.[3]

05Services and Routes

Hutzot HaMifratz functions as an intermediate stop on multiple Israel Railways routes. A March 2021 service schedule listed it on both the Nahariya–Haifa Hof HaCarmel route and the Karmiel–Haifa Hof HaCarmel route, with weekend service running at one train per hour in each direction, Friday departures from approximately 06:00 to 14:00, and Saturday-night service from approximately 21:00 to midnight.[6]

In December 2018, Israel Railways extended a Saturday-night train departing Karmiel at 19:06 to run through to Tel Aviv Savidor Center rather than terminating at Haifa Hof HaCarmel, providing passengers at Hutzot HaMifratz and the stations at Kiryat Motzkin, Kiryat Haim, and HaMifratz Central with a direct connection to Tel Aviv without a transfer.[7]

In August 2026, Hutzot HaMifratz was among 12 northern passenger stations temporarily closed during a weekend of infrastructure works. The other affected stations included Nahariya, Acre, Ahihud, Karmiel, Kiryat Motzkin, Kiryat Haim, HaMifratz Central, Yokneam–Kfar Yehoshua, Migdal HaEmek–Kfar Baruch, Afula, and Beit She'an.[8]
