Hapoel Ironi Karmiel

Published

01In brief

Hapoel Ironi Karmiel is an Israeli football club based in Karmiel, a city in northern Israel. Established as a new senior club in June 2019 after several years without a senior side in the city, it rose from the lower tiers of Israeli football and won historic promotion to Liga Alef North — the third-highest tier — at the end of the 2024/25 season. A published profile reported that approximately 1,000 players participated across the club's projects, which included girls' teams and dedicated football groups for children with autism.

02Origins and Establishment

After several years without a senior team in Karmiel, a new club named Hapoel Ironi Karmiel was established in June 2019.[1] Former goalkeeper Oshri Levi was among the professionals involved in leading the organization, and Shaul De-Chekrul was appointed as its first coach.[1]

De-Chekrul set out the project's ambitions upon his appointment: "It is a new team with ambitions to reach the higher leagues. A good and strong team is being built here in order to gain promotion."[1]

03Competitive History

Hapoel Ironi Karmiel began its senior competitive life in the lower rungs of Israeli regional football. During the 2022/23 Liga Bet North A season, the club opened its campaign with a dramatic 3–2 home victory over Maccabi Ironi Yafia.[4] Yafia led 2–0 after goals by Ahmed Khatib and Murad Awad in the 12th and 16th minutes, but Eliyahu Derei, Shachaf Sapir, and Bilal Saba completed the comeback, with Saba scoring the decisive goal in the 86th minute.[4] Two Yafia players were sent off in stoppage time.[4]

In the seventh round of the State Cup, the club lost 6–0 away to Hapoel Afula.[5] All six of Afula's goals came between the 36th and 79th minutes. Karmiel had played only State Cup fixtures up to that point because of the situation in northern Israel.[5]

The defining moment in the club's short senior history came at the end of the 2024/25 season, when Hapoel Ironi Karmiel earned historic promotion to Liga Alef North — the third-highest tier of Israeli football — by defeating Beitar Yavne 3–1 in extra time in the Liga Bet inter-district final.[2] Coach Oren Flash, who had joined the club during the season, was retained for the 2025/26 campaign.[2] Flash had previously coached Ironi Nesher in Liga Alef North before the competition was closed following suspicions of unsporting conduct, after which he moved to Karmiel.[2]

For the 2025/26 season, the club's first in Liga Alef North, Flash described his squad as young and supported by several veteran players. He also emphasized its relatively modest budget, cohesive dressing room, and disciplined players: "This is what characterizes us."[6]

Karmiel began the 2026/27 season with a 3–1 away win over newly promoted Hapoel Ihud Bnei Jat.[7] Bnei Jat took an early lead through Masoud Wattad's penalty, but Ben Azoubl equalized before halftime, and Itay Arazi and Amit Taktuk completed the turnaround.[7] As of September 22, 2026, Karmiel stood fourth after three matches, with two wins, one draw, seven goals scored, and two conceded.[8]

04Community and Youth Development

Alongside its senior competitive program, Hapoel Ironi Karmiel developed a broad grassroots football operation. Under club chairman Omri Dror and professional youth director Idan Kaplan, the club expanded its youth setup and recruited players from Karmiel and surrounding communities.[3] A profile reported that the youth department comprised 11 teams, including two girls' teams, and approximately 600 children. Players traveled from Kiryat Shmona, the Krayot, and other northern communities to participate.[3]

Across all the club's projects, approximately 1,000 players were reported to be participating.[3] The club also created dedicated football groups for children with autism aged five to eight and later opened another group for participants aged fourteen and older. Both groups were described as full and in high demand.[3]
