01In brief

Dean David (born March 14, 1996) is an Israeli football striker who played for M.S. Ashdod and Maccabi Haifa before joining Yokohama F. Marinos in 2025. He has also represented Israel's senior national team. His decisive goals for Haifa included an 87th-minute winner that ended a 16-match league winless run against Maccabi Tel Aviv in January 2022, followed that October by a two-goal performance featuring a back-heel finish. He was the Israeli Premier League's joint top scorer in 2023/24 with 20 goals and moved to Yokohama in 2025, his first club abroad.

02Early Life

David was born on March 14, 1996, and was a teenager from Moshav Nehora when he played for Hapoel Ashkelon.[1][6] In January 2013, aged 16 years and 10 months, he came off the bench in Ashkelon's State Cup match against Maccabi Kiryat Gat and scored in the 84th minute of a 4–1 victory, registering his first senior-career goal.[7] Ashkelon youth coach Ilan Meshumar described him as a natural scorer who was hardworking and modest.[7]

Ashdod's academy identified David while he was at Ashkelon, but Ashkelon refused a proposed move, after which he spent a year without playing.[6] He subsequently scored a hat trick in a youth match against Hapoel Be'er Sheva attended by M.S. Ashdod coach Nir Klinger.[6] Klinger then gave him senior opportunities, including starts against Hapoel Haifa and Hapoel Ra'anana, and Ayal Lahman later established him as a regular starter.[6] His recorded spell with M.S. Ashdod ran from 2013 to 2021.[1]

03Career

Maccabi Haifa agreed to acquire David from M.S. Ashdod in June 2021 in a deal involving €1.1 million and players Guy Dahan and Ido Almishli.[8] After completing a medical, David signed a four-year contract; Haifa's sporting director described him as capable of playing either on the wing or as a striker.[8] He was among the arrivals intended to sustain Haifa's scoring strength after the departure of Nikita Rukavytsya ahead of the 2021–22 season.[9]

David initially found the move difficult and did not score in his first nine league matches for Haifa.[6] On January 3, 2022, however, he scored the 87th-minute winner in a 3–2 comeback against Maccabi Tel Aviv.[4] Haifa had trailed by two goals before scoring three unanswered goals in the final quarter-hour, securing its first league victory over Tel Aviv in more than five years after 16 consecutive meetings without a win.[4]

By a May 2022 interview, David had scored 15 league goals and become Haifa's leading striker.[6] He described the championship as the first title of his career and a major achievement, while acknowledging the physical demands of a season containing nearly 60 team matches, including European group-stage fixtures.[6] The season coincided with his mother's illness, and he said that winning the championship had been a shared family dream: “I promised her I would bring her the plate.”[6] He also recalled travelling with the national team at her request rather than remaining with her in hospital.[6]

In October 2022, David scored both goals in Haifa's 2–0 home victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv at a sold-out Sammy Ofer Stadium.[5] He opened the scoring in the 84th minute and added a second in injury time, sending a back-heel shot past goalkeeper Daniel Peretz while facing away from goal.[5] Coach Barak Bachar praised his hard work through a difficult personal and professional period, while David credited the club's staff for their support.[5] Reflecting on his mother's influence, David said: “My mother was a very influential person in my life and especially in my career.”[5]

David also scored in Haifa's 2022 Champions League away match against Juventus in Turin, reducing the deficit to 2–1 late in the game.[10] Juventus scored again in the 83rd minute to secure the result.[10]

In January 2024, David scored twice in a 4–0 league victory over Maccabi Netanya.[11] His first came in the 38th minute, when he converted his own rebound following a header, and his second made the score 3–0 in the 64th minute.[11] He added another brace in May during Haifa's 5–1 away win over Maccabi Bnei Reineh, an important result in the championship race.[12] After the hosts had scored in the second minute, David put Haifa ahead 2–1 in the 14th minute and scored again in the 61st.[12] He finished the 2023/24 league season with 20 goals, sharing the scoring title with Eran Zahavi.[3]

David scored 14 league goals in his final season at Haifa before being presented as a Yokohama F. Marinos player in July 2025.[2] He described the transfer as his first move abroad and said he was happy and excited to join the Japanese club, whose supporters he had followed on social media.[2] On August 16, 2025, he scored on his official debut in a 3–1 league victory over Shimizu and completed the full 90 minutes.[13]

His playing time subsequently became limited: during the first part of 2026, he made 12 league appearances, including three starts, with 264 minutes, no goals and one assist.[14] By October 21, 2026, he had made one appearance in Japan's 2026/27 league season, playing 21 minutes as a substitute against Kashima Antlers on August 7, alongside a 20-minute League Cup appearance.[14] His overall Japanese-league record at that point stood at three goals in 24 appearances.[14]

04International Football

In October 2024, Israel coach Ran Ben Shimon explained David's omission from that month's national-team squad.[15] Ben Shimon said David had expressed dissatisfaction with his playing time and a preference not to be selected if he would not receive significant minutes, and that this request had influenced the decision to leave him out.[15]

David returned to the squad in November 2024 for Israel's final two Nations League matches.[16] Ben Shimon called his earlier omission a mistake and said David's fitness warranted selection.[16] By June 2025, David had scored once in nine senior international appearances.[3]

05Legacy

David finished his Maccabi Haifa league career with 59 goals in 127 appearances, winning two league titles, one Toto Cup and one Super Cup with the club.[2] He reached double figures in league goals in each of his four Haifa seasons, with his 20-goal campaign in 2023/24 bringing a share of the league's top-scorer distinction.[3]

By March 2025, his 79 goals for Haifa across all competitions placed him eighth on the club's all-time scoring list.[17] At that point, he had scored 51 league goals for the club at Sammy Ofer Stadium and seven goals in Haifa derbies during the millennium, second in that derby comparison to Rukavytsya's 11.[17] His two-goal performance against Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2022/23 helped Haifa toward a third consecutive league title, alongside memorable contributions such as his Champions League goal against Juventus and the late winner in the January 2022 comeback against Tel Aviv.[17]
