Ariel Harush

Published

01In brief

Ariel Harush (born in 1988) is an Israeli former professional football goalkeeper whose senior career lasted approximately 17 and a half years and included 20 appearances for the Israeli national team. Raised through the Beitar Jerusalem youth system, he became the club's first-choice goalkeeper and later its captain before playing for several Israeli and European clubs. He announced his retirement in April 2026 at the age of 37, signing off with the words: "The best screenwriter in the world could not have written a script like this."

02Early Life and Youth Career

Harush developed in Beitar Jerusalem's youth academy.[3] In the 2006–07 season, he was part of a historic youth-team double, winning both the youth championship and the youth cup under coach Guy Azouri.[3] The following season he was promoted to the senior squad as the club's second goalkeeper, and he began to receive starting opportunities during the 2008–09 campaign.[3]

His rise through the system also produced individual moments of note. In a State Cup round-of-16 penalty shootout against Maccabi Tel Aviv, Harush saved an opposing penalty and then converted one himself, a contribution that effectively sent Beitar through to the quarterfinals.[3]

03Club Career

Harush made his senior debut for Beitar Jerusalem in 2008 and established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2009–10 season.[1] He was appointed captain the following season.[1] A ynet retirement profile credited him with a league championship, two State Cups and a Toto Cup during his Beitar years.[1]

He departed Beitar in 2014, joining Maccabi Netanya before moving to Hapoel Tel Aviv the following season.[1] In 2017, Harush moved abroad for the first time, signing with Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus.[1] He then signed a three-year deal with Hapoel Be'er Sheva, a period that included loan spells at Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Nitra in Slovakia.[1] In 2021 he signed for the Dutch club Heerenveen but did not make an appearance there before returning to Be'er Sheva for a second stint.[1]

Harush joined M.S. Ashdod in 2023, the club that would prove to be his last.[1] His final match was Ashdod's 1–1 draw against Hapoel Jerusalem on 25 January 2025, after which a shoulder injury ended his season.[2] Ashdod released him at the end of that season, and after declining several offers and going without a club for nearly a year, he formally announced his retirement in April 2026, aged 37.[2]

04International Career

Harush made 13 appearances for Israel's under-21 side before earning his first call-up to the senior national squad in 2010.[2] His senior debut came on 26 May 2012 in a friendly against the Czech Republic, a 2–1 defeat, and he went on to record 20 appearances for the national team in total.[2]

In March 2014, while serving as Beitar Jerusalem's goalkeeper, he was called up by Israel coach Eli Gutman for a friendly against Slovakia and was considered a leading candidate to start and potentially succeed the established Dudu Aouate as Israel's regular goalkeeper.[4] At the time, Harush said: "Everything depends on me and I must prove that I deserve to be the starting 'keeper."[4]

Some of his most prominent international performances came in competitive matches later in his career. In an October 2018 UEFA Nations League match in Beersheba, Harush launched a long pass that set up Tomer Hemed's opening goal, made several saves, and was part of a 2–0 victory over Albania that sent Israel to the top of its group.[5] The following March, in a 4–2 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Austria, Harush produced a series of first-half reflex saves that helped Israel hold a one-goal lead at the interval despite Austria having been the dominant side.[6] Coach Andreas Herzog credited Harush and the defense as the primary reasons Israel remained in front at halftime and disclosed that he had consulted goalkeeper coach Klaus Lindenberger before selecting Harush, who had not played for his club team for several months before the fixture.[6]

05Legacy and Retirement

Harush announced his retirement from football in April 2026, having been without a club since M.S. Ashdod released him following the 2024–25 season.[7][2] In a video marking the occasion, he wrote: "27 years, thank you to soccer, thank you for all the moments, thank you to the Holy One, Blessed be He, for everything!"[7] He had declined multiple offers during the intervening year and had not played a competitive match since Ashdod's draw with Hapoel Jerusalem in January 2025.[2]

Across his career, Harush captained Beitar Jerusalem and made 20 senior appearances for Israel.[1][2] Ynet's retirement account itemized six club honors: four with Beitar Jerusalem, followed by a State Cup and a Champion of Champions title with Hapoel Be'er Sheva.[1] Sport5 summarized his record as a championship and three cups, reflecting a difference in how the sources classified his honors.[1][2]

06Controversies

Harush's time at Beitar Jerusalem was touched by controversy during the 2012–13 season, when owner Arkadi Gaydamak brought two Muslim players of Chechen origin—Dzhabrail Kadiyev and Zaur Sadayev—to the club.[1] Harush publicly backed the signings, and during preseason a small group of supporters swore at, spat at and threw rocks at him and midfielder Dario Fernandez in response.[8] The episode was part of wider protests by sections of the Beitar support against the recruitment of the Chechen players. Harush and Fernandez subsequently made peace with the supporters involved.[8]

In May 2025, Harush was named among the footballers investigated in an insurance-fraud case.[9] Police alleged that dozens of suspects, including 50 soccer players, sought to fraudulently obtain a total of approximately 13 million shekels.[9] The report concerned police allegations at the investigation stage and did not constitute a finding of guilt.
