2001 Netanya Mall Bombing

Published

01In brief

The 2001 Netanya Mall Bombing was a Hamas suicide bombing attack that took place on May 18, 2001, at the entrance to the Sharon Mall in Netanya, Israel. A 21-year-old Hamas operative from Tulkarm named Mahmoud Ahmad Mahmoud Marmash detonated an explosive device concealed beneath his coat, killing five civilians and wounding dozens more. The attack was organized by the Hamas infrastructure in Tulkarm and masterminded by Abbas al-Sayyid, who was later convicted of the crime and sentenced to 35 life sentences. The bombing occurred during a period of severe escalation in terrorist violence against Israelis following the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in September 2000.

02Background

The bombing took place against a backdrop of sharply escalating terrorist violence in Israel. Following the outbreak of the Al-Aqsa Intifada in September 2000, nearly 2,000 attacks — including suicide bombings, shootings, mortar and grenade attacks, and stabbings — occurred during 2001 across the West Bank — known by its original, indigenous Jewish name of Judea and Samaria — Gaza, and Israel proper, killing more than 200 Israelis and injuring over 1,500.[1]

The violence had grown progressively more lethal. Earlier attacks in Netanya itself included a car bomb on January 1, 2001, that injured 35 civilians, and a suicide bombing on March 4, 2001, in which three civilians were killed and dozens wounded.[2] That March 4 bombing — carried out at the corner of Herzl and Shoham Streets by Ahmad Omar Hamdan 'Alian, a 23-year-old resident of the Nur Shams refugee camp near Tulkarm — was described by a Tel Aviv University study as the first fatal suicide bombing of the conflict; it was organized by the same Tulkarm Hamas infrastructure, headed by Fuaz Badran, that would later plan the Sharon Mall attack.[3][4] Hamas's military wing, Izzedin al-Qassam, framed the March bombing as the first of ten suicide attacks trained in response to Ariel Sharon's election as prime minister in February 2001.[5]

Across the broader confrontation, armed elements of Fatah-Tanzim had initially led attacks, but Hamas and other organizations took the initiative as violence expanded from shootings at Israeli vehicles and ambushes of IDF soldiers to strikes on civilian population centers inside Israel.[6]

03Course of Events

On May 18, 2001, Mahmoud Ahmad Mahmoud Marmash arrived at the Sharon Mall in Netanya carrying an explosive device concealed beneath his coat.[3] Marmash, a 21-year-old unmarried Hamas operative from Tulkarm, had been recruited specifically with the intention, in the words of the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, of "perpetrating a suicide bombing attack at the 'Ha-Sharon' shopping center that would inflict heavy civilian casualties."[7]

According to a later retrospective account, witnesses Dudu Abudi and his daughter Shibolet noticed the suspicious individual near the mall entrance and called the police station, which was approximately 50 meters away.[8] The officer dispatched to the scene did not arrive in time. The bomber attempted to enter the mall but aroused the suspicion of an entrance guard; he then detonated in the security-check area.[8] Five people were killed in the explosion.[3][2] Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack.[9]

04Casualties

Sources consistently report that five civilians were killed.[3][2] Injury totals vary. The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center gives approximately 86 wounded in its event entry and more than 100 in a caption elsewhere in the same report.[3] The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a ynet comparison report approximately 100 wounded,[10][9] while the initial ynet chronology and the Globes account of the subsequent indictment report 86 injured.[2][11]

05Perpetrators and Organization

The attack was carried out by Mahmoud Ahmad Mahmoud Marmash, a 21-year-old unmarried Hamas operative from Tulkarm.[3] He had been recruited by Fuaz Badran, another Hamas operative who had also headed the Tulkarm infrastructure responsible for the March 4, 2001 bombing.[3][3] The broader planning and organization of the attack was attributed to Abbas al-Sayyid, the head of Hamas's military wing in Tulkarm.[12]

Al-Sayyid was indicted in 2002 and charged with initiating and organizing the Sharon Mall bombing, among other attacks.[11] On September 22, 2005, he was convicted of masterminding the May 18 attack and the Park Hotel suicide bombing on the eve of Passover 2002.[10][12] An Israeli court sentenced him to 35 life sentences plus an additional cumulative 50 years.[12]

06Aftermath and Commemoration

Just four days after the attack, Hamas organized a commemoration ceremony for Marmash in Tulkarm municipal park on May 22, 2001. The gathering drew a large crowd and representatives of local organizations; Abbas al-Sayyid spoke there on behalf of Hamas in the district.[7]

Marmash was also publicly commemorated at what appears to have been an educational institution. A photograph captured during Operation Defensive Shield in April 2002 showed young men, apparently students, posing before a poster of the bomber — an image the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center presented as an example of the attacker being held up as a role model.[3]

The May 18 bombing was one of 35 suicide bombings successfully carried out between March and December 2001; another 16 were thwarted during the same period.[6] The wave of attacks continued into the following year. The Park Hotel suicide bombing occurred on the eve of Passover 2002, and Operation Defensive Shield began on March 29, 2002, two days after the hotel attack.[6]

07Historiography and Casualty Reporting

Sources consistently report five killed but differ on the number wounded. The Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center's report contains internally inconsistent figures, citing approximately 86 wounded in its event entry and more than 100 in a caption elsewhere in the report.[3] The Washington Institute for Near East Policy and a ynet comparison report approximately 100 injured.[10][9] The Globes account of the indictment and the initial ynet chronology both give 86.[11][2] The available sources do not establish a single definitive injury total, so accounts of the bombing should preserve the reported range and identify which source supplied each figure.
